Our garden is in full bloom. Bright colors and growing things makes me happy. Today we are talking about flowers. This could be a week long unit if you wanted, there's so much possibility!
First, we went out to the garden and talked about what we see. We pretty much do this every morning when I go out to water and pick from the garden. What colors are there? Are there big, small, medium sized plants? How are they growing? (I like to sing the song from my trees post earlier- it goes right along!)
I also talked about how the fruits and vegetables will change as they grow. The tomatoes will turn red, the peppers orange and yellow. We talk about the vocabulary- stem, leaves, blooms, roots....and what the plants need to survive. Have your littles help you water them and notice where the sun is shining!

Next, we came in and did felt flowers. We built the stems, leaves, blooms, and added the sun. Notice I'm still using my couch for the felt board! :)
We read through the flowers booklet that I made.
I let my little explore and color the book as we read it.

Another activity we did was wine cork painting- yes, this one was designed with mamas in mind!! I found it on pinterest of course.... get some of those corks laying around- I know you have them- put some paint on a plate, and voila! A whole new experience with painting! I drew an outline of a big flower for my little to paint since we were talking about that. If it's 5:00 (it always is somewhere)- go ahead and take a little sip, mama. You deserve it! My little still wanted to use paintbrushes as well. I'm not going to stop that! :) Here is another opportunity to talk about all kinds of things- mixing colors, what colors to use, the flower parts, etc. Can you see he's still in jammies? Just one of those days...LOL. |
Last, we made a flower picture with geometric shapes that I had cut out with different stem lengths. If you don't have colored paper (I'm making great use of my stacks and stacks of scrapbooking paper), just draw them. The shapes add a little more to the conversation (talk about sides, verticies (corners) and compare them). It also makes an interesting picture. Hope you have fun! TTYL :) |
